O&L Stories: Wonder Walls

The Osborne & Little design studio share their thoughts on large-scale mural wallpaper designs.

"When we first embarked on the FOLIUM collection, it was always our intention to take advantage of the digital printing process, allowing us to explore the freedom of scale and to capture in detail, the beauty of hand-painted artwork.

The larger scale designs TRAILING ORCHID and MAGNOLIA FRIEZE were both hand-painted in the studio and then scanned into the computer. This enabled us to experiment with different layouts and compositions. We often find that we have to go back to the drawing board and paint more elements, perhaps a leaf or a flower and then add this back into the composition on the computer.

TRAILING ORCHID was one such design where we tried many different background textures and designs before we added the subtle background tile design. The hummingbird was also added to create a sense of movement and brought the design to life.

Our MAGNOLIA FRIEZE design was originally drawn large-scale with chalks on black sugar paper, to achieve the effortless look of sketching on a blackboard.

For both of these large scale designs we carefully considered  how they might be used in a room. The MAGNOLIA FRIEZE design was designed to be central to the wall so that a sofa, table  or bed-head can be used in front and not to obscure any of the wallpaper. Similarly with TRAILING ORCHID, the design cascades from the ceiling, so that it can be seen above the furniture within a room.

These large feature wallpapers provide a focal point for a room, acting as a wall mural or painting and can provide a platform for a decorating scheme."
